As a follow-on to my E-Toys experience, they also have an On-Line Gift
Registry. I thought of an on-line gift registry about 3-4 years ago and
thought it was such a good idea I was going to implement it myself. It makes
so much sense: the gift recipient browses at his/her leisure at any time
during the year and adds gifts from a wide selection of on-line gifts. When
anyone wants to buy that person a gift for any occasion you visit the
registry and pick something. This is perfect: the recipient get's what they
want and the giver get's them something they really want. All hassle free
with shipping and everything.
The E-Toys registry is limited obviously to E-Toys. A 'global' registry
(across all on-line retailers -- not associated to a particular company)
would be a HUGE success. It would just tie into all the on-line retails and
give them a cut. Some company in San Fran as a web site at
<http://www.giftregistry.com/> but there is no service. Yahoo has one:
<http://giftregistry.yahoo.com/> . It is pretty good, but clunky: they need
better integration across e-tailers. It could use more work for
International markets and shipments. They really screwed-up (not like Yahoo)
in that you have to invite people to view/use your registry (see below). The
invitation is a URL that is sent to their e-mail address.
To demonstrate the value in an on-line gift registry I have set up my own
and urge all of you to try it out for my Birthday in 16 days (April 16).
:-)) Here's what the Yahoo invitation looks like:
> Hello, you have been invited to come and check out the Yahoo! Gift
Registry of curtis_johnstone.
> You need to have a Yahoo! ID to join the registry. Please click on
the URL below to sign up if you do not already have a Yahoo! ID:

If you get an access error, keep trying these one at a time (this is what I
mean, it sucks for large groups):
