I went to Hawaii with some friends from Apr 24-May 8, 2008. We brought mountain bikes and camping gear with us, rented a truck and camped for free 10 of the 14 nights we were there. (stayed in a condo for 2 nights when we arrived, and in a cabin for 2 nights later.)
We spent the first 9 nights on the Big Island, then we split up and Beth and I continued on to Maui for 5 days.

It was a bit of a pain flying with the bikes, but we found some fun riding (unfortunately most of it wasn't great for photos), and I was amazed how easy and hassle-free it was to camp for free on beaches etc.
Hawaiian resorts and restaurants are expensive but it's definitely possible to do a low-budget trip if you try!
