I registered and, to be used as a mailing list/news archive site. ( will probably just redirect to; is already taken, though it doesn't seem to be in use)

Why "shmop"? shmop is one of my favorite unix words. It stands for "shared memory operations", a set of system calls with other cool names like shmat and shmget. (see the man page for shmop)

"shared memory operations" seems appropriate for a public archiving service (which I have been meaning to set up for a while), and "" has such a nice ring to it...
