I also thought about making some kind of token web site that's
visible only to myself, whose purpose would be to let me restore
these files from backup. "There, it's a web site, happy?"

Oh... your suggestion reminds me of an idea I had years ago to
get widely distributed backups of your data for free: encrypt and
hide chunks of it in various popular music/video/porn files, then
share those files and wait for them to spread :)

(not really cost-effective given the relative size of data I want
to back up and the size of files that are typically shared)
