I always planned to accomplish something like that by making an
index of my personal mail archives using HURL [1], then adding a
feature to HURL to allow search results to be downloaded in mbox
format, then set up a mime handler to invoke mutt on some magic
mime type. (e.g. text/x-berkeley-mailbox )

But I hardly ever manage to make time to work on HURL.
