I'm not much of a war buff, and I hated history in school, but I
find a lot of it pretty interesting now. (esp good-quality TV
documentaries)

Here's a good interview with the pilot who dropped the bomb on
Hiroshima 57 years ago:

say whatever they want without worrying about offending anyone.

I don't know if this is a benefit of the elderly, or a lack of conscience.
When these things were done, those involved were relatively young, but
these bombings were still treated with a surprising level of crassness [1].

Young children also have that knack usually at the extreme
embarrassment of their parents.
