They do. You need to add the apm module in /etc/modules (with modconf,
IIRC, or by hand).

Hmmm... Did you try my hack with /etc/serial.conf?
I have:
/dev/ttyS0 uart 16550A port 0x03f8 irq 4 baud_base 115200 spd_normal skip_test
/dev/ttyS2 uart none
Also, is your IrDA enabled in the BIOS?
FYI, here is what findchip says on my computer:

You need the kernel source. I got the beta version working (linked from my
page). I never tried to build the final one, because I am waiting for 2.4.18 to
be released.
