too many files

When I moved my site from one system to another a while ago [1],
I forgot to install something on the new system: a cron job that
periodically removes old images from the temporary area used in
the barney fun page. [2]

I just discovered that this directory now has about 80,000 files
in it:

   un: httpd/html/games/barney> ls cache | wc -w
     78894

I wonder how many files I can have in a directory before something
bad happens.

Also in the "too many files" department, yesterday I was cleaning
up the hard drive on my home machine to make room for more MP3s,
and I noticed that I now have almost a third of a million files in
my personal HTTP archive. [1] (307,620 files as of the end of July.)

This probably sounds like a waste of disk space, but when tarred
and compressed all these files take less than 1.5 gigs, which
costs less than $5 to store on CD-Rs.

These tar balls aren't the most convenient format for these
archives to be in, but I can extract them back out again in a
few years when I have a terabyte of storage on my wristwatch.
