Business Summary
GSI Lumonics, Inc. was formed as a result of the
merger between General Scanning, Inc. (GSI) and
Lumonics, Inc., which was completed on March 22,
1999. GSI developed and manufactured a broad
line of laser systems for a wide range of
applications in the automotive, electronics,
semiconductor, medical and aircraft industries. In
addition, GSI produced a line of laser subsystems
and components, which were used in GSI's own
systems as well as sold in the merchant market. GSI
also designed and manufactured a line of printers
for medical instrument companies, and recently
introduced a new foil imprinting technology for use
in photo labs and retail photo finishing outlets.
Lumonics is a world leader in the development,
design, manufacture and marketing of laser-based
advanced manufacturing systems, products and
services. In addition to lasers, Lumonics' systems
often include precision or fibre optics, proprietary
control software, robotics, machine vision, motion
control and parts handling.
Financial Summary
GSI Lumonics Inc. is engaged in the development,
design, manufacture and marketing of laser-based
advanced manufacturing systems for the
semiconductor, electronics, aerospace, automotive
and packaging markets. For the nine months ended
10/1/99, total sales rose 69% to $185.9 million. Net
loss totalled $37.3 million, up from $5.3 million.
Revenues benefitted from the merger with General
Scanning. Higher loss reflects increases in
purchased R&D and other charges.
I'll probably buy some tomorrow.
