Rock climbing: Adirondacks, New York State

by Tristen Rasmussen

Route: Pete's Farewell (5.7, 3 pitch, trad), on "Pitchoff cliff"

Sunday we climbed "Pete's Farwell". An awesome 3 pitch climb with tons of gut wrenching exposure.

Pitch 1: I lead the first pitch and setup the belay station at a ledge which turned out to be 10 feet above the actual typically used station.

Pitch 2: Dwight lead the pitch which started with a down climb of 10 feet to start the traverse. We took the lower traverse which put us directly underneath an overhanging dihedral block in the corner. The rest of the pitch is an awesome crack climb right up to the 2nd belay station.

Pitch 3: The 3rd pitch starts off with a very commiting move as you leave a nice comfortable 6" ledge and start up the long crack to the top.

Overall this is a fantastic climb, one of my favorities. The cars driving past on the highway hundreds of feet below provide a constant reminder of the exposure, or how fucking crazy we are! However, the quality of the rock for protection is awesome. The 2nd and 3rd pitchs are amazing crack climbs...full on fist and hand jams!
